We got dad a Weber too! Just the classic 22.5" kettle thing though. His old one is about 20 years old and the legs broke off, so he had a friend weld it. But the body warped and the lid didn't fit tightly. Ironically he's been using a rusty old brake rotor from my Saab to weigh down the lid! Embarrassing!
The Performer is a charcoal grill that just uses propane to light the charcoal, right? My father just uses regular Kingsford charcoal. I don't know if it's really that great, but I know we've always got a bag or two around.
I've gotten the knack down pretty well using a gas grill. Haven't had the patience or interest to try to master the Weber though. And honestly, I can't taste a difference. I guess I'm not much of a "foody." You CAN get creative with the charcoal grill though and cook stuff indirectly. We've had some pretty impressive pork tenderloin that way. Enjoy!
