Wow! Lots of people dissin' plasma here... not sure why.
We've had a Panasonic (actually HP but made by Panasonic) 42" 720p plasma for about 4 years now and it's fantastic. No burn-in issues whatsoever, fantastic color quality, and viewing angle better than any LCD. I don't buy the "it needs a dark room" stuff either... it's quite watchable in direct sunlight (it's on the opposite wall from a very large west-facing window).
Downsides? Power consumption / heat production is a bit higher than an LCD or current-model plasma (the plasmas have improved considerably in the last few years) and yes... I wish it was larger. I view from about 8' away and it's okay, but I think a 50" would be perfect.
One other thing to think about: is most of what you're going to be watching standard-def or high-def? Almost all current TVs do well with HD material and that's what you're going to see in the store. The performance with SD (aka 480i) sources varies more. We actually initially bought an off-brand 50" TV and ended up returning it because the picture was awful when watching from our SD Tivo.
