There is a ton of incorrect info in this thread, and lots of opinions being presented as facts. Here are some of my opinions and experiences:
With a 10'-14' viewing distance you definitely want to go big. I have a 50" that I view from 8'-10', a pretty nice size. You rarely hear people complain that they bought too big a set.
120Hz on LCDs enables them to have a feature called "frame interpolation" which takes the 24, 30, or 60 frames per seconds input from DVD, your cable/satellite box, game console, etc and create intermediate frames that have a smoothing effect on the motion. Different brands implement this differently but that's the gist. Some people like it, some people don't. I don't, I think it makes everything look weird. It can be disabled but then you're pretty much watching a 60Hz set. IMHO, if the choice is between a big 60Hz set or a smaller 120Hz, go with the bigger one.
120Hz also allows 24 fps (ie movies on Bluray) to be shown with the proper cadence vs a 60Hz set, this may or may not be important to you.
As for resolution, if you go LCD it's a non issue as they're all 1080 in these sizes. If you go plasma, you will have the choice of some entry level 720 sets. A 720 set with a good HD input will look really good as long as you're not sitting too close. The debate 3-4 years ago as 1080 was becoming available was whether or not you could even tell the difference from a typical distance. At 10-14' on a sub 50" screen it's unlikely you'll be able to tell.
My personal set is a 50" 720p Panasonic plasma from 2007. I've been extremely happy with it. Most of the negative things you hear about plasma are myths.
