IMHO, even the 4dr hatch can be dispensed with in favor of the 5dr hatch.
The model priorities should be something like this:
1. 5dr hatch/fastback for volume sales
2. 2dr convertible for extra profit premium and marketing purpose, halo model
3. then 2dr, 4dr or 3dr (not hatch but 2drs on driver side, 1dr on passenger side) if the sales volume exceed target, and more models are needed to justify production line expansion.
For those really wanting lockable space in the trunk, there can be lockable space under the cargo floor designed into the car.
Saab needs to regain its confidence in carving out its own niche. Not offering hatch/fast back was the biggest mistake. Porsche Panamerica is a great design and has no qualms about selling a hatchback for premium price. Saab needs to sell something the camcord crowd are not selling in order to justify price premium. The statistical study should not be asking what kind of cars most people want to buy, but what kind cars people would be willing to pay up the premium over the luxury camcords. The high percentage of Volvo and Saab wagons on the road during model years that Toyota and Honda stopped selling wagons proves that point in spades. Until Cambry, Accord, ES350, TL, TSX and the bulk of 3/A4/C series/class are no longer 4dr sedans, there is little to be gained for any smaller brands to compete against them head-on.
