for nominal car model lines to get bigger: residual inflation.
My first BMW, a 5 series from the 80's (E28), was lighter and narrower than today's 1 series! The E46 3 series (1999-2006) was already heavier and wider than the E28 5 series. Likewise, today's Honda Civic are bigger than Honda Accords made 20+ years ago.
The growing size and consequently price of new models in a "model line" allows used cars to retain a higher percentage of its original MSRP (because the current MSRP of a new car with that same model name is higher). That's one of the reasons why Honda dealers can crow about Hondas keep resale value better than Toyotas. Accord grew in size much faster than Camry did. New lines of small cars then get introduced at the bottom of the pyramid, such as 1 series (bigger than E30 3 series and arguably even E36 3 series), Fit (heavier than the original Civic and comparable in size), etc..
