strictly speaking, you are correct re my comment "it's a turbo. that's it", as you are right, ecoboost would refer to turbo + direct injection + all kinds of Ford specific engine management, and that it is a whole package (as is the power plant in every car on the market). I also agree that there is nothing wrong with having a name for one's system (eg Saab has BioPower, GM ironically has EcoTec engines, very similar sounding to Ecoboost!)...
That said, there was something about the way it was presented that struck me as over the top (much like the accompanying safety commercial)... especially given that most of their vehicles actually do not have this technology (yet the commercial gave the opposite impression)! I guess I viewed the direct injection part as evolutionary: most cars now are getting direct injection anyway... Ford probably could have put turbos in many of their cars ages ago, but instead stuck with big inefficient v8s to get power. That's why I find it amusing that all of a sudden they are interested in turbos + coined a name that obfuscates it... perhaps I am using too broad a brush, but like GM/Saab, Ford absorbed much capability from Volvo (safety + turbocharging) and is milking it for all it's worth... fair enough, that's business... but it doesn't terribly sell me on their products (even if they may be improving as a result)...
Finally, there are certainly numerous other manufacturers producing cars with gasoline direct injection + turbos (GM, BMW, Audi, Mazda...), and for the most part, they don't have silly names for the combination (aside from TLAs) because often there is a NA and turbo version anyway... and that is my point, imho it is the turbo that is the key to "ecoboost" and the concept is not new...
