The inch is not really an American unit being that it was in common use in the 10th century :)
I know of no metric drive method for socket sets. The imperial measure was in use long before metric became popular and to save pointless duplication presumably it was decided to keep to a single standard drive method no matter what scale the actual business end used.
The thread scales I'm aware of are ISO Metric, Whitworth, BA, UNC/UNF the last 3 all inch based. They're obviously worked around their threads with a set number of hex sizes for nuts/bolt heads.
