Actually, I inherited from my father a set of SAE sized sockets which were made in the 1940s with a 1/2" HEX drive hole rather than a square drive one -- I think these were commonly sold from farm equipment parts stores in the '30s and '40s until the square drive came to dominate. I've never seen a proper ratchet for them, though; Pa always used a long 1/2" Allen wrench type handle for them and stopped using them as soon as he could afford a set of square drives with a ratchet. My cousins in Europe, however, say that hex drove sockets are not unusual there, but they insist that they're 13mm hexes, not 1/2". I believe that European plumbers also use USA sizes for tapered fittings, etc.
I have used the old hex drive sockets with an Allen adapter on my ratchet at times to provide just the right length of extension for some situations.
