I ones helped a friend of mine that was restoring a (I think) 36 Harley engine and I had to manufacture new bolts for the engine casings since the heads were all stripped.
After some head scratching and measuring I found out the 1/4" bolts were something called UNS. 1/4" UNC have 20 threads per inch and UNF have 28. This bastard had 24 threads per inch.
I ended up buying a tap (the cheapest of the two) making a control nut with it and then cutting the threads of the bolts in my lathe using the nut as a gauge.
