OK, bike guys. Help me learn...

Three times over the past month I've pulled out my 1977 Motobecane 10-speed and gone for a ride. Other than a few cruises on a borrowed mountain bike here and there, it's been a very long time. And I forgot how much fun it can be. Hills, middle-aged legs and all.
So now I'm cruising some bike shops, thinking about maybe getting a bike. I think it comes down to a road bike or a cross bike. I have numerous dirt roads and trails for riding, and nice paved country roads, too. And it can also wear road tires.
I like mountain bikes, but most seem too single-purpose, and they leave me behind my buddy's Jamis road bike on which he does regular 30-50 mile rides. And keeps telling me to get a bike.
The local shop is recommending Bianchi, Redline, and Jamis cross bikes. I can budget about a grand, and I know MSRP is likely more than that. Or I could get a good used bike, but then it's even more important to know what I'm looking for.
I know nothing about the different components the shop guys talk about, but do know getting good bits and pieces is important. I also don't know much about frame geometry, which seems a bit of a mystery, so I have a lot to figure out.
All help and advice is welcome. TIA!
