Full service history, owned by a compulsive neighbor. Great car. 7,000 miles later it has needed very little--now at 155K.
You get more car for the dollar with the used Saab. Solid, safe, known quantity. Holds as much or more as a Focus or the Saturn. Although the domestics can be fixed anywhere. I considered Yotas, Subies, Focus, too.
VW has the Jetta wagon, but I have not heard anything positive about the Jetta. Daughter's friend has one and it ALWAYS needs something. Is not cheap to keep.
Subies are another possibility, but for $3k tend to be pretty used up.
Or find her a good 9000. Other daughter has one of those. Also been very reasonable to own. And holds her entire life when she moves 2X a year.
The Yota Matrix/Pontiac Vibe is OK--basically a Corolla wagon-- but are not real good drivers. But it might be hard to find a decent one in your price range. I think of them in terms of accident protection, and they worry me.
