Second the opinion on renting cars for long road trips. IMHO, I wouldn't want be driving a 10yr old Mercedes more than 50 miles from my home base. MB from the early mid 90's to very recent vintage were not at all reliable; the company was undergoing the infamous cost-cutting / volume expansion regime of Herr Jurgen Shrempp. Every single one of my friends who bought "inexpensive" MB's during that time period came to regret the purchase within a couple years; they all bought new! "Inexpensive" as in a $30-40k MB instead of what had used to be $50-60k for a proper Mercedes. The problems were never ending, from electronic gremlins to engine leaks. When I'm more than 100 miles from home base, I would not want to pull into or get towed into an unknown shop whose owner sees only dollar signs on the hood rolling in his door.
I second the opinion about getting a rental car for road trips actually costing less in the long run. If you have to get a used car for road trips, I'd recommend some plebian car with widespread dealer network and inexpensive repairs.
I recently bought a decade-old 9-3 convertible as the third car in the family, but that's strictly for local use. The 9-5 wagon and the Toyota Highlander are both excellent long trip vehicles, especially the latter in terms of just-in-case repair needs far away from home. Both have proven to be very reliable: the 9-5 has broken down only twice in more than 9 years, both due to my own oversight; the Highlander never broke down even once in 6 years. Neither vehicle has any chronic gremlin issue. Knock on wood :-) The 9-3 convertible is still too new (to me) to tell.
