Have you tried renting a minivan like the Odyssey (quite common at rental places thanks to their high resale value)? or the Sienna via the dealership's Toyota-Rent-A-Car program? If you put a roof box on the wagon, chances are that the driving dynamics, noise and fuel consumption advantages of a eurowagon are all shot. As for gas mileage, the difference on highway is no more than a couple mpg even without the roof box; that's like half a gallon for every 100 miles, or $15 difference for 1000 miles! You can't really compare the 3600-4000lb vehicles (they all are, including the eurowagons) to your 3000lb classic 900 with manual transmission. The heavier wagons/minivans/SUV's all schuck rocks when it comes to fuel consumption.

You might want to try something like Zipcar on a trip first; they do have euro wagons.

OTOH, if you really want a 3rd car, just for kicks (no shame in that; that's what I'm doing, a training convertible to find out if convertible really fits our life style before wasting $15k on a 2-3yr lease on a new one), I did manage to find an inexpensive source for car insurace: switching from our old carrier to Costco's affiliated Ameriprise cut our insurance premium by more than half! All three combined cost us less only $600; the convertible only added less than $200! That's per year, not per month! We are not buying any optional collision+comprehensive of course as there's no point buying insurance for things that you can pay out of your pocket (unless required by law, of course).
