I can't stand driving minivans (driving dynamics), didn't like the recent SUV rental, or even Forester. Outback wagon was not so bad, but not wonderful, and nothing like a Saab. That was the closest to a euro wagon. I mainly have been looking for rental vehicles with roof rails so I can haul a few mountain bikes + ski box with us using our own rack setup... admittedly tougher requirements! for shorter trips, we've rented various cars + no rack, all of which performed worse in the key areas I care about than Saabs (except mpg in a few cases) + mostly weren't as safe... rental car companies like to rent cheap generic cars... fuel economy with the rack drops a couple mpgs + a few more for the bikes. I notice very little impact on performance/handling with the rack on the c900s, so I can't imagine it would be an issue on a 9-5 wagon (or similar). 9-5 without rack was stellar on highway (mpg as well). other vehicles I've driven don't seem to live up to the EPA numbers when I drive them, yet the 9-5 exceeded them!

but, the upside, is my insurance on 2 c900s is dirt cheap + not much more than half what it would be for a single off lease 9-5 + rentals are covered in that plan (I'm one, like you seem to be, who does not believe in being over-insured). I'm cheap + haven't found the right 9-5 yet, but I am more resolute than ever after this year's rental!
