Oh ya, the useless kids of today...
I always get a kick out of this, and while yes, I completely sympathize with frustration of nobody understanding how anything works these days, the interest of this generation lies not with how the gadgets are made, but what you can do with them. Most 'grownups' probably can't figure out half the things a computer can do, but clearly these are very valuable job skills, and can employ the same intellectual engagement as taking things apart did to a previous generation.
When I was a kid, it was always the joke about adults not knowing how to program a VCR, and adults were probably frustrated that kids couldn't knit or rebuild a Model T or something. Now weâre feeling the same way about having a mechanical understanding of things, and kids are probably flummoxed that I still donât know what the hell twitter does. Every generation faces its challenges with changes in technology.
Besides, the kid at Radio Shack probably spends 90% of his time selling cell phones, digital cameras, GPSs etc., and who can blame him? The profit for Radio Shack lies in those gadgets, not knowing about the 50 cent bits of wire in the back of the store. Honestly, I'm just happy they still bother carrying as much of that stuff as they do as it's nice to have a local resources and I bet they're not making much money off it.
