or you can always buy a new one, things are just fine. But when many gadgets stop working you are often left with a useless chunk of technology. This is why knowing how things work is important.
To me it's basic self-sufficiency. I want to know how things work so I don't have to rely on others for everything. It's harder (and sometimes impossible) to do with technology like cell phones where much of the system is out of one's control, but on lots of other things "knowing" is essential to a good quality of life, IMHO. Otherwise you're just another willing victim for Geek Squad, shifty mechanics, sketchy tradesmen, etc.
Maybe I'm crazy, but I LIKE being able to buy a 6000 watt generator and wire it up so there's heat and light when the power is out for a week during an ice storm. It's good to know how to diagnose and fix the car, washing machine, tractor, clothes dryer, and snowblower. It's good being able to fix a leaky faucet, put a new hard drive in a computer, set up a computer/printer network, build a shed, replace a drive gear in a copier, wire a new electrical circuit, fell a tree, connect the home entertainment system, etc.
Sure, it's definitely good to know what you can DO with a product or technology, but knowing how it works so you can diagnose and even fix it is also important.
