How many of those fatalities were from backing up? And what percentage of the backing up fatalities would be prevented by a rear camera? This maybe one more bling to distraction the driver. How many injuries and fatalities will occur because the driver was looking at the camera and not paying attention to the anything else?
My brother-in-laws Suburban has a rear camera with a good size screen. It takes 2 people to use the back up camera effectively, one to drive the vehicle and watch what is happening out the windows, and another to watch the screen lower down in the dash. A more effective display would take over the center rear view mirror and not add something else to look at.
Some of the back up cameras appear to be little more than a camera and display from a low end digital camera. What does a low end digital camera cost? Can’t be much to add to a car, its value may not be much more.
