Depends on vehicle, imho. It seems to me that the backup camera has a place in full-size SUVs that even tall drivers cannot see out of when in reverse. Also, maybe in large sedans the demographic for which seem to focus on, um, mature, amply fed drivers who may not have the flexibility to survey side and rear sight angles.
But in small- mid-size sedans, I don't see the need for back up cams. In these cars, a driver should be able to use the mirrors and, by turning in the seat, can see past the edge of the trunk lid.
And here's a swell opportunity to make another pitch for functional design. It is plumb ridiculous to design cars that have blind spots to the rear and sides simply to indulge a particularly silly passing taste for over-ornamented automobiles that look like furious fish or service pods for the starship Enterprise.
