Like I said, States may differ on this issue, but most states forbid insurance companies from demanding a certain shop do the work.
This has nothing to do with how your own insurance policy is written with respect to the maker of replacement parts.
If I were insured with a policy that specified "Like and Kind and Quality" (Or whatever the language is), I would make darn-sure that the replacement is actually of "like kind and quality." Chances are high that any significant body part (bumper, light fixture, fender, etc.) made by other than the OEM for a Saab is an inferior part. Demand "like kind and quality," which means, in most cases, OEM. Even if you have to get technical... Brand of paint, is the panel zinc-dipped and of the same gage steel, etc. etc. etc.
Insurance companies will try to minimize their expenditure. It's their job (as far as they are concerned). I don't blame them, but that means I don't immediately trust them.
I had a car totaled once. It was not my fault. My insurance company settled with me prior to assignment of liability... then they settled with the other driver's company.
Estimated cost of repairs on my car's damage = $6100.
Insurance company's original offer for my car = $2500.
What we settled on after I "faught with them" = $5000.
Don't assume everyone is looking out for your best interest.
I hope it works out for you Jason. The damage doesn't look too serious.
