I think there are two ways automobile "design committees" can look at their jobs:

-A car's design should reflect and enhance the vehicle's function, or
-A car's design should enhance perceived brand value, fit into the manufacturer's model line up, and support the customer's feeling of self worth.

It seems to me that more automobile designers go with the second option, so the designs tend to be overly (sometimes absurdly) embellished and filled with compromises that subordinate functionality to appearance. Many cars are like teens who express their individuality by looking like their friends.

Examp: I often drive an '05 Honda CR-V which I bought because it is well suited to what I use the car for. It's a great commuter, hauls me and my kayaks where I want to go, the awd has never been outdone by New England weather, and it cruises at 75 with decent mileage on 87 octane. And, pleasant surprise!, the seats are almost as comfy on a long drive as those in my Saab. I've been told by friends and professional car reviewers that my CR-V is a "transportation appliance." Well, no, it's a transportation tool and, like any well wrought tool, its design makes it enjoyable to use. Granted, the CR-V isn't as much fun as the Saab -- but I get razzed for my Saab choice, too. Bottom line -- it doesn't matter what friends, neighbors or passersby think of your car choice. You have to pay for it and live with it.
