Interesting. So you really do go for the toll road approach. Fair enough. If you set aside that money that would have gone into taxes + use it to pay the monthly transponder bill, maybe it works out better with, as you say, "fewer leaks"... same applies to other services I suppose, though I'd be concerned re implementational issues in some cases...
I can see your view. I can't say I fully subscribe to it, but I do agree that many of your historical "statist" examples I would subscribe to less. It is important to note that in actuality, life in Canada is a whole lot more like USA than USSR (or your other "examples for effect")... even our personal tax rates are not *that* different (depending a little on bracket, and especially after Americans buy health insurance) from rates in the US, in spite of public perception on both sides of the border... In both countries, there is also a rural vs urban divide... there are differences in how we spend our tax dollars (though in very recent years there seems to be more convergence in that regard, for better or for worse)... as noted previously, left vs right leanings + fiscal responsibility are not necessarily correlated: I have certainly observed governments (at all levels) deliver "left" leaning social programs, all while being much more fiscally responsible than those advocating the delivery of fewer "social programs" (in some cases, though not always, that is simply a balance between spending on social programs vs spending on wars, effectively just a different sort of social program)... I think that was historically not the norm...
I suppose your take would be "I'd like none of the above" + fair enough. We've had the Keynes discussion before as well wrt economic intervention, so I get it, even if I don't fully agree (in that case, what I look at as damping a harmonic oscillator, you see as exacerbation of a potentially systematic problem)... given time, we'll see how it plays out... Overall, I'm pretty happy with the balance up here in Canada: certainly not perfect, but it's a pretty darn good place to live. Usually I am pretty cynical, but somehow, in spite of the many things I observe that I question, on the whole, I have to say there's not really another country I'd rather live in... I think a lot of Canadians would agree with me on that + I guess that was the point I was attempting to make throughout this thread: we must be doing something right up here!
cheers,
James...
