What I wrote was not intended as any indirect disparagement of Canada at all. Contrary to popular belief, I'm not at all convinced that Canada is more statist/big-government than the US, at least in the past decade. We can see the relative valuation of the two dollars: a strong indication of the declining liberty in the US, and relative rise in Canada.
I would not at all wish to impose what the US has on Canada. IMHO, one of the most important reasons why the English-speaking people are among the most prosperous in the world, is because the ability to vote with feet among US, UK, Canada, Australi, New Zealand, and to a lesser degree places like Capetown (the rest of South Africa less so), Singapore and Hongkong. This form of competition among governmental service providers is very healthy for the preservation of liberty for the individual. When things get really oppressive in the US, like during the Vietnam War, many Americans voted with feet to move to Canada, and the Canadian dollar was worth more than the US dollar.
The biggest difference in government spending between the US vs. Canada is in military/security. Just as predicted by many an apparently paradoxical libertarian observations, the more the government spends on / takes over something, the worse it gets: the US is less secure than Canada as a result: the US faces far greater risk of terrorist threat than Canada does, largely because of the enormous military spending we have overseas. Many conservatives despise the UN (as do I), and yet they like to say that they want the US to have the strongest military anywhere in the world; it never seems to have occurred to them that if the US military were indeed the strongest arbitrator anywhere in the world, then the US would become the UN, with all other countries' politicians coming to the US to argue and settle their petty disputes. As in any court cases, at least half the litigants leave unhappy (and the majority of the other half think they deserved even more ). LOL.
