I live in rural Somerset, in the West of England, and I'm on my sixth Saab having started with a 96 in the early '70s

I'm just coming up to 63 years of age. Private education, degree from New College, Oxford - I went into publishing, then became a freelance radio journalist and presenter but after 6 - 7 years moved into furniture design because I didn't want to chase jobs round the world! Current status "nouveau pauvre" not least because I inhabit an old water-mill and bits of it keep falling off.

Luckily my wife also works (running her own cookery school specialising on teaching chefs/cooks for big yachts) and both children (pigeon pair) have left home. 2 cats, both orange - one friendly and laid back, the other in my view clinically autistic.

Can sort of see the point of SUVs but only for people I don't want to be like. But I'd be stuck with a European sensibility if I knew what it was. I think you would call me a liberal with a small "L" but increasingly suffer from hardening of the categories.

I love old sports cars and belong to the AC Owners' Club so I can go on trips like to Classic Le Mans - also a member of the Goodwood Road Racing Club. But I can't afford a classic car so it's just as well I love my Saabs...
