your last paragraph is interesting...
a good point about the smart car + it's ilk that must have awfully stiff front ends to pass any sort of crash testing - amazing the dummy impact values don't get too high actually, so some good engineering there in a way, but it reminds me of the videos from Fifth Gear and Folksam of small cars crashing into old volvo wagons (940 or 960?)... the small cars benefit significantly from the Volvo's huge crumple zone + the Volvo, while a safe car for it's era, comes off significantly worse... (the tests were well designed to take advantage of the small cars' strengths + the Volvo's weaknesses, but fair enough)...
the second point about the importance of active safety I disagree with (actually one of the best reasons to own a Saab), but it might be a regional or generational thing? we were taught to avoid collisions (there is no such thing as an "accident", as all parties can avoid a collision, even if only 1 party is legally at fault). One must always plan ahead (escape route etc) + do appropriate checks before executing such a maneuver to ensure safety (because as you say, sudden moves into other vehicles may be worse). One must always maintain space appropriate for the speed of travel. Congested areas move slowly, so any "hit" is low speed and a non-issue (I was taught to manage the speed of the cars behind me to maintain space on all sides). At higher speeds, once must maintain greater space + hence high speeds are only achievable in areas of less congestion... I have never had any problem doing any of this, + I have never been in a collision, so it must be working!
