I bought a used 2008 MINI Cooper S on 31 July, 2010. First point, the car is addictive. I love driving the thing, particularly in the mountains. Second, I was surprised at how comfortable the car is on long trips. It is not Saab comfortable, but I found that I did not mind spending a day cruising the interstate when I needed to. The longest travel day so far was 12 hours of driving from New Hampshire back to Virginia. Today, I discovered that it is amazing in the snow. Traction was not an issue, even with all season tires. I also enjoyed turning off the electronic nannies and practicing a few things I learned at Team ONeal Rally Racing school this past fall. MINI has taken care of the two problemls I encountered by replacing the timing chain tensioner when I complained about the noise when the motor was cold, and the turbo duct which kept popping off. Apparently the original duct was not molded correctly. I also work on my own cars, and discovered the MINI has a great after market, and software is available to help with troubleshooting and resets. Only time will tell if I made a good choice from a maintenance and repair viewpoint. Right now it is under MINI's service warranty. Several on this forum and my father are concerned about MINI safety. I too was impressed by its NCAP rating, but also by the experiences of MINI owners who survived severe accidents in the car. Admittedly the cars were totalled, but the passenger compartments remained intact and all walked away. My big concern is the brakes on the MINI are awesome, and I fear someone rear ending me in sudden stop situations. But then I have the same problem on my Ducati and it has less crumple zone than the MINI! I enjoy my MINI and my Saab 9-5 Aero. Both have different personalities, and I enjoy both!
