relative masses of vehicles matters. iihs did a series of tests to demonstrate that, eg yaris vs camry or fit vs accord etc... the small cars all performed poorly, in spite of the 5 star barrier tests for all models...
the only thing is, in the suv side impact, isn't it a standardized load run at a stationary car under test? if so, that should be independent of relative masses: a supposed simulation of an suv hitting the car under test...
if so, it points out once again, the merits of real life testing (in addition to standardized testing of course), like what Saab does! it also points out the merits of trying to design a safe car, not just one that passes a few publicly viewable tests...
