The people who should be upset about this are the investors in those copycat companies. What made anyone think copying the body shell of a Mercedes while producing at much lower volume than the real thing, with the risk of another company just around the corner could in turn copy the same body shell, would be a profitable business model at all?? The investors who have stakes in those copycat companies should be the ones upset at the companies' failure to build any brand identity.
As for charges of copying or legality thereof, there were plenty of those levied against Americans a little over 100 years by Europeans. The Europeans would have been better off focusing on improving their own products and methods of production instead of lobbying governments into fighting the protection game for them. The ones that they had to worry about were no the copycats; to the extent that copycats chewed up resources and labor in America 100+ years ago (and now in China), they actually wasted the resources and labor that the genuine innovators in those countries (America back then, and China now) could have laid their lands on.
