yeah, I have no idea what Intel has held as patents vs not throughout the years but I would be very surprised if their portfolio was small... btw, an interesting read (for those interested in Intel + business) is "only the paranoid survive"... most of the proprietary stuff that affects the consumer (negatively) in recent years (decades) is packaging related rather than technology per se... change the package, change the motherboard, force obsolescence... I would be very surprised if Intel was not patenting many of their core cpu developments (process especially). Having a patent then makes licensing the technology significantly easier (btw, just did a quick google search, intel sure has a load of patents, including for all the x86 technology, and indeed, they licensed the x86 patents to AMD + others)... honestly, it would be foolish for Intel to approach it any other way imho... how much one charges for the licensing is a decision one makes to suit the business case...
ok... for some reason I remembered Shakespeare's "borrowing" mainly coming from greek + roman times... but it has been ages since I did anything with literature, so I could be totally out to lunch! everyone seems to be suing Coldplay these days citing the same sort of thing (as the pub) so it is not inconceivable that it can go either way + I agree the legal stuff can grow old fast!
James...
