I have limited driving time behind the wheel of suvs in general, but (with various Saabs as my reference point) I can say that I hated driving both the 2009 Forester and the 2010 GMC Acadia, neither of which are on your list (but I have had extensive hours/miles driving both). If you search on "other cars" you'll be able to find my reviews of those.
Since you like the idea of the 9-4x, why not try out the caddy version? assuming it has been released that is... might be half decent? If you are looking at VW's, maybe also look at Porsche Cayenne? Some here like some of the Japanese vehicles in that class...
I'm assuming you're not interested in wagons otherwise my vote would also be for a 9-5... Mike sure has some car salesman skills! the A3 is about as far from a midsize SUV as it gets (but nice car)! Something like an A6 Avant or Outback might bridge the wagon-SUV world if you were on the edge? 9-3X also, though maybe too small? it has a little more clearance + xwd... I mistook it for an SUV at the end of this video (see link), but if you were looking for towing, way bigger clearance, or just to sit way up high, then probably none of the wagonish options will appeal...
