I assume if you wanted a station wagon you would have asked about station wagons :)... Here's some SUV commentary - we bought one about a year ago.

I've rented Edges before and they're pretty nice. I was pleasantly surprised. Room for 5, drive and handles well (for an SUV). Got a solid 25mpg w/regular gas driving 85-90 mph between LA and SF Cali (to the safety nuts, this is called moving with traffic on I-5) with 5 in the car + luggage. Would have been my top choice, but I needed a 3rd row seat.

We ended up buying a Honda Pilot which we really like. Very comfortable seats (have taken 2 long (>2000 mi) road-trips) - almost as comfy as Saabs. I think the Acura (same platform) would probably be even nicer as that is what Acura is supposed to be (nicer Hondas).

We went with the Pilot because we needed the extra passenger space (can sit 3 across in 3rd seat vs. 2 in the MDX), and it was cheaper. The only downside to the Pilot is some do not like it's looks, and it could use more power... and gas mileage is just OK (can get 25 mpg, 70-75 mph with mid-grade, maybe only 20 with regular) - I think it has poor aerodynamics with it's boxy shape. I guess the boxy shape is a polarizing element as well.

We've found we need more passenger room now that our kids are older (12 and 14) because we always seem to be carting around a gang (our tweens move in packs), and the Pilot can seat 8 which has come in handy many more times than I thought it would when I bought it.

My brother has a XC90, and it is very truck-like which can be good or bad depending on your tastes (to the positive, Volvo is now including 5 yrs maintenance). Land Rovers have a reputation for crappy reliability (also big engines with mediocre performance and low mileage), and the VW gets crappy gas mileage and also doesn't rate high on the quality front.

The Mazda (not mentioned) is supposed to be really nice (it wins most of the comparisons), but we thought it was too much like a car.
