I really don't care about "environmental impact" and do not make purchasing decisions based on such considerations. (I'm not going to get into the fraud of the environmental movement here since this is not a political board.) All I would really concern myself with when evaluating a hybrid is reliability and how long it will take to pay back the higher initial cost in fuel savings. When I look at hybrids I see higher costs and complexity as compared to a conventional vehicle and do not see any benefit to purchasing one.
BTW, I wonder how much of their capacity the batteries must lose before they require replacement. Usually a battery will lose capacity over time rather than fail suddenly. Are the batteries still considered to be good if they have 50% capacity? 25%? 10%? Presumably the symptom that would be seen as the batteries deteriorate is increased fuel consumption.
