Hybrids aren't for everyone, that's for sure; heck, I'm pretty sure they aren't right for me. But the car belongs to my wife, and for her, it seemed right.
Initial excess cost will be made up in about 100K, at $3 a gallon, by my figuring. So if the car is good for my pocket and the environment starting at 100K, and if she's going to drive it for 200K in 6 years as she did the last car, then it makes sense IF you're happy with the car and the way it drives. She was.
Long term, upkeep costs project to be about the same as with any other car, based on model repair history. So far--36000 miles in 17 months--it's been trouble free.
I don't know if environmentalists are frauds or not. All I know is that everything is finite--resources used to build cars, resources used to fuel cars, money in my bank account--so if I can do something to help extend all of those finites a little farther into the future, why not?
