Almost all European cars were like that, I think. And of course many British cars had right-hand gear levers, outside the car - but also inside, such as on post-war Bentleys.
The other thing is that many continental sports cars - particularly Italian ones - used to be produced with the steering wheel on the right although they drove on the right - my father told me that was so they could see the edge of the road on mountain passes and so forth, before anyone dreamed up Armco barriers! Not much other traffic so overtaking visibility was less important.
