It's pointless talking about single-vehicle anecdotal experience. I have driven through "incredible snow-covered dirt/gravel road" in my convertible shod with All-season tires. What counts is side-by-side test on the same driveway / slope. Snow tires may indeed deliver better vehicle control etc. after getting going and needing to brake, but in so far as the getting going part is unconcerned, especially on icy up hill, AWD wins hands down over FWD. My wife's Highlander shod with 2yr old all-season tires could easily handle icy up hill conditions where even my OG9-5 shod with brand new Blizzak Revo would get stuck at times.
