Not sure what kind of hills you have in Ohio but here in CO we have some real heart stoppers along with 1,000 drop offs, and no guard rails (or shoulder)--since apparently you can't hang them in mid-air. The problem with front wheel drive is that on a steep hill the weight transfers to the back of the car and it doesn't matter what you have in terms of tires. I went on a wild ride in my Jetta last time I lived here (in the '80's)in spite of studded snow tires. I started up a steep driveway and suddenly couldn't go forward, when I tried to stop I started slidding sideways toward a shear drop, and my only choice was to let it roll backwards (scarey fast) toward a busy road. Everytime I tried to brake it went for the dropoff. I managed to stop just as I rolled into the road and fortunately no one was coming. This time a brought a Subaru with no regrets. Personally I think AWD is un-neccessary for most drivers, but that are places where it is needed. Even Range Rovers have studded snows here.
