oh, ok, maybe I'm remembering it wrong... for some reason, I thought it always used to be cars in the circle having the right of way, then the zipper rule came in for a while, then it reverted... I probably am completely out to lunch then... I have family in Halifax, but I don't live there: I'm originally from the valley so I've largely managed to avoid the rotary over the years (though I've never really had a problem driving in it)...

imho, rotaries make a lot of sense, especially in situations where multiple roads intersect (Halifax is full of 5 way intersections)... traffic lights here (Ottawa) are almost never in sync so it can be slow to get from A to B. We're also fairly tied to a few large roads/highways so if there's a collision at rush hour it's slow. In contrast, I find Halifax pretty quick at rush hour because it is more of a grid of equally sized roads (easy to nip off + take an alternate route)... then again, it's a more compact city anyway... Ottawa is very easy to drive in, but there seems to be plenty of complacency + red light running... roundabouts (and red light cameras) seem to be the solution... sounds like this is a fairly universal phenomenon...

(as an aside, do you know of a good indy in Halifax who knows Saabs?)
