Based on observations and personal use of my local roundabout, its usefullness during rush hour depends on which road the driver is using.

Our local roundabout was constructed last summer to replace a fully signaled traditional intersection, conplete with separately signaled left turn lanes, that was only two years old. Talk about a waste of our State's scant financial resources! Oh well....

During evening rush hour the two lanes of southbound traffic enter the roundabout at the 12 o'clock position and nearly evenly split between the single lanes exiting at the 8 o'clock and 5 o'clock positions. Everything is great for them and for all the north bound traffic entering at the 5 o'clock position. The poor drivers trying to enter at the 8 o'clock position have to wait an eternity of time for a break that will allow them access to the inner roundabout lane. For these drivers the roundabout is a disaster! Using the outer roundabout lane will shoot these north bound drivers south on the 5 o'clock exit - not what most of them want.

Adding to the confusion is a very seldom used driveway to a professional office strip mall which intersects the roundabout at the 2 o'clock position. A tiny number of southbound drivers need to circle slightly more than 270 degrees thru the roundabout to access this drive. A rare but startling occurrence when entering the circle northbound from the 5 o'clock position. Just when you think you have all the traffic flow adequately anticipated, Oops!
