I have to agree; commuted through Cumberland Circle for Posted by Bill Homer [Email] (#3427) [Profile/Gallery] (more from Bill Homer) on Sun, 27 Mar 2011 09:50:41 In Reply to: Clueless Journalist, Tim, Sat, 26 Mar 2011 23:21:53 Members do not see ads below this line. - Help Keep This Site Online - Signup |
years. Until it is explained what makes a "modern roundabout" work better than what currently exists, the concept of adding more traffic circles is not sold to me. The tally of 92 accidents in a year means almost two per week, most likely to occur during rush hour, which means that twice per week my commute was bumped up from unacceptable to ridiculous - an accident shuts down part of the circle while the cops are called and the mess gets cleaned up. Note that with the 10% current unemployment rate in Illinois, meaning less people commuting, I believe that the 2010 statistic may have been on the low side too.
The circle is on Illinois Highway 58, a four lane road and the only real way to get from east to west for several miles in either direction due to geographical issues such as the Des Plaines River and the City of Des Plaines. Fortunately, I now commute elsewhere.
I have experienced driving on "roundabouts" in the UK, and they seem to work, but the conditions are different and the population is accustomed to them. Of course, nothing tops the "Magic Roundabout" fun in Swindon, where I used to visit regularly (straight off of an international flight, half asleep, driving on the wrong side of the road, ....)
