I read this article on the trib website a couple days ago and thought they did a poor job explaining a "modern roundabout." I still have no idea what the difference is. The only thing I took from the article is that people are fearful of change.
My first encounter with a roundabout was in Ireland and I will admit I was a little confused at first and got a few honks entering the roundabout. It didn't help that I was still trying to adjust to driving on the left. As someone else already said, once you go through two or three large roundabouts it gets pretty easy and I began to appreciate the design.
We live in a Chicago suburb that contains a roundabout (3 road intersection), but unlike traditional roundabouts it has a stop sign that you must obey before entering. Its not uncommon for people to sit at the stop sign not knowing how to navigate the intersection so I'm glad that more roundabouts will be installed in the area. I'm starting to wear out my horn ;-)
