Fear of roundabouts is based on distrust of drivers Posted by MI-Roger [Email] (#882) [Profile/Gallery] (more from MI-Roger) on Sat, 26 Mar 2011 13:02:28 In Reply to: Re: Some residents not embracing roundabouts (Illinois), Noel, Sat, 26 Mar 2011 12:39:44 Members do not see ads below this line. - Help Keep This Site Online - Signup |
Let's face it. If some drivers are clueless on how to use a four-way stop, a traffic device they have seen used their entire life, what will they do with something completley new to them?
Michigan's DOT is having an illicit love affair with roundabouts - installing many where it makes no sense other than the chance at a US Gov't sponsored prize for greatest number of such traffic control devices constructed (I'm not kidding about this contest or prize). As you said, they are disarmingly easy to use. But many drivers still do it wrong. The new roundabout near our home has some drivers using it as a three-way stop, while others never yield to anyone.
One correction to your earlier statement. Europe uses rotaries in which the entering vehicles have the right-of-way. The US uses roundabouts in which the entering vehicles must yield.
