The last time I checked, Norbert Reithofer at BMWAG is planning on nearly doubling volume in the next 5 years with nearly half of all units built on FWD platforms. Having a Saab badge to go with a large chunk of those new units may well be a sound strategy to avoid repeating Jurgen Shremp's mistake in mass marketing MB a decade ago.
While allegedly 80% of 1-series owners do not know which axle drives their cars, it is the other 20% and the magazine reviews paying close attention to which axle drives their cars that are the trend setters that cause 80% trend followers to buy their 1-series BMW to begin with. If entry-level luxury buyers were all practical and unswayed by magazine trend-setters keen on that last bit of performance difference that one would hardly ever use on public roads, they'd all have bought the 9-3 hatchbacks instead giving BMW's the raging success in the late 90's and early 00's. LOL.
