Using Saab brand to expand on Mini FWD platforms will also help avoiding diluting BMW's own RWD performance brand identity. Like MB's experience in the 90's showed, it's no easy task for a luxury carmaker to expand volume production quickly under its own brand without risking massive quality control issues blemishing its own marque. Unlike Chrysler's mass-market identity (that MB tried to utilize but in vain), Saab is still a premium brand that can take advantage of and expand on platforms developed for Mini (and somewhat larger FWD's) by BMW. Unlike the other existing brands in BMW's portfolio (like Triumph), Saab's brand identity is actually well suited for an "executive" FWD car that takes Mini's drive train and attach to a bigger and more practical body.
Saab of course will do well being part of a stable well managed automotive empire, like BMW and Toyota (which could also use a European brand in its portfolio). It will be ironic to see Saab reunited either with Triumph (where the Saab engines from 99, 900 to 9-5 came from) or with Subaru (now part of Toyota).
