I second the trek FX series. I actually bought a "road bike" with drop bull bar and geometry and found that I could not react to changing urban road conditions fast enough (on my way to the bike path) and sold it a week later. I had a hybrid before it then went road. Sold the road and spent more money on a good hybrid again. I have a Trek FX 7.5 and it's great, everything you need in a road bike (short of race ready) and everything you want in a bike to glide on outside, get in shape and clock those miles.
My 7.5 FX was the last year that it came with hydraulic disc brakes vs mech now...either way I would opt for discs vs canti....I also upgraded my crank drive to XT and upgraded the clip pedals.
great line of bikes! if you're not straight up racing... you will love this type of combo if you give it a try.
