Peter, I've always heard exactly what you said about frames, but when I was shopping for a road bike last year, I just didn't see the difference. I did think that carbon in my price range (I rode bikes up to $2500) was a particularly smooth ride, but I did find the frames very unresponsive. Same with steel in the price range (though I have ridden a pricey Serotta which was amazing).
Anyway, I ended up with aluminum again. I've ridden nothing else since 1989 and have never found the frames harsh. Just my impressions, but they sure don't match what I've always read/heard about frames.
