I don't mind the "harshness" of my Quantum either... but my friend's Felt carbon is different, as is another friend's Lemond (steel).
To me, the responsiveness of my Aluminum Klein more than makes up for whatever (small) ride quality sacrifice it has. (Mine does have a carbon fork, as do many aluminum frames these days.) I agree with you about the unresponsive feel of Carbon. Smooth ride, but not the same power transfer. I rode a bunch of bikes when I bought mine in '04 and found the same thing you did.
I think if I were to get one today, I'd get a slightly newer Klein Q-pro. They went to Carbon seat stays in '03 and kept the carbon fork, but the rest of the frame is the classic Klein Aluminum, which means the chain stays remain ultra stiff for energy transfer. Alas, Trek bought Klein and, well, you know the rest of the story... no Klein bikes for sale these days.
I guess that its one of those "to each their own" kinda things. I, for one, don't mind the ride that aluminum gives... Sounds like you're the same. I also tend to ride on pretty nice roads. No cobble-stoned streets in my neck of the woods!
As you can tell, I like Klein bikes. The internal cable routing and smooth (non-filed) welds are just so elegant. My first Klein was stolen (it would be a collector's item now). That's when I bought my Attitude. The Quantum and Palomino came later.
