My experience of Nuclear is related to the construction and decommissioning of plants rather than actual operation of them. I personally like nuclear power because it's very clean and very efficient, and the risks are very small. The risks are a bit like the risks associated with flying on a commercial airline - the odds of getting in an accident are miniscule, but if there is an accident it's going to be catastrophic. As I see it, there are two big challenges facing nuclear power. The first is it's VERY political, and almost nobody want's a nuclear powerplant in their back yard. Whether or not they're in favor almost seems to blow with the wind. Ten years ago when gas was cheap there was little interest from either the public or the industry itself in building more nuclear plants. Increasing oil prices increased interest in new nuclear plants, but it is not that simple. Nuclear power plants generate all sorts of nasty byproducts, like weapons grade plutonium, etc. Weapons grade plutonium is weapons grade plutonium, and you can't really turn it into anything else. Nuclear arms non-proliferation treaties signed 20 years ago place serious limitations on the amount of nuclear weapons that can be created, and also on the amount of raw materials that go into nuclear weapons that can be created. This directly limits the number of active nuclear power plants that can exist. So, it's not as simple as, everybody wants new nuclear power plants, let's go build them. That is a real constraint on the growth of the industry. Newer plants are more efficient (produce more power with less waste), so as older reactors go offline, newer ones can come on, but the delta is not really enough to justify shut down an existing reactor so that two new ones can be built. As regards the day to day operations of working in one, I'd expect it's not too difficult from many other fields. People are still people. It's hopefully better than it is on The Simpsons, as one poster said.
