Wow, I don't recall any problems with AC in my 1986 900 when driving in Nevada/Arizona 110-115 degree heat. I was just passing through and did not give it a second thought. I remember being surprised by the large number of overheated cars on the shoulder. AC on, doing about 95-100 mph with the flow of traffic... C900 seemed to really hit the sweet spot at that speed.
That was before I turned my 900 into a track queen and threw out the AC to save weight. I know, young and stupid.
