Because they are designed to deliver sound efficiently in a small package. Some frequency ranges are intentionally boosted according to whatever psycho-acoustic research Bose did. That of course would shoot total harmonic distorsion numbers to hell.
They are outstanding speakers for concert/lecture/live settings where you are usually limited by power . . . and they deliver outstanding clarity in the mid-range. They are also excellent theater / home-theater speakers for similar reasons, plus packaging/aesthetic considerations.
If your music preference is the highest precision reproduction possible with minimum THD, then obviously you wouldn't want any ported, horn or bass-reflex speakers at all. Heck, acoustic-suspension speakers may not even suffice if you what lowest THD across the spectrum when playing loud; you may have to look into planar speakers in that case.
Different speakers for different purpose. It's like comparing minivans vs. Mini Convertibles . . . which is "better"?
