I always find the "Mac vs. PC" argument on a Saab bulletin board ironic. How many times have you had to explain why you like Saabs better than your cubicle mate's Kia, when clearly the Kia is a better value? And by their terms of argument, they are correct. The Kia gets them from point A to point B for less money, and has relatively few sharp edges on the interior.

We instead argue about intelligent design (the non-controversial kind), road feel, efficiency and the overall pleasure we get from driving (and maintaining) our Saabs.

I just had to replace my daughter's laptop (Dell Latitude E6400) that her college "gave" her because of a LCD screen failure. I bought her a 13" MacBook Pro with an Intel i5 processor from Microcenter for $1000. The current Dell model equivalent to my daughter's computer is a Latitude E6420. It has an inch larger screen than the Apple laptop and a list price of $1300. Using a street price of $700 for the Dell, what does my extra $300 get me?

Putting the new Mac next to the old Dell on the coffee table is like comparing (ready for the punchline?) a Saab to a Kia. Before even opening them up, the Mac has a smooth sturdy metal case that is lighter than the Dell and easy to cary. The Dell is black plastic and sharp edges. Open up the Dell and the keyboard surround is festooned with stickers, the keys feel cheap and the keys are not well etched. The MacBook surround is clear and uncluttered, the keys feel good and they are backlit. The ergonomics of Mac are well thought out while the Dell is haphazard.

I won't even get into the Mac OS X vs. Windows 7 debate, but I will say that Windows 7 is better than XP, and much better than Vista. For me, OS X is worth at least $100 over Windows 7.

I use Windows XP at work, Mac OS X at home, and Linix on servers, so I have lots of experience on all three. I much prefer Mac OS X, but don't mind using Linux.

So, are all Mac users deluded fanboys? If your competitor can charge a premium for their product over yours, it is much easier to atribute consumer preference to irrational behaviour than to produce a better product. I think the Apple brand loyalty has been earned by the company. Mac users don't seem care what Windows users think, but some Windows users seem to think that it is their duty to point out the Mac users are paying too much for an ostensibly equivalent computer. Be happy with your choice. I'm happy with mine.
