If you look at the original iPhone and the smartphones that were already available when it was released, there is a major disconnect between what it offered and what it cost. It was a phone, it had an internet browser, it had an mp3 player, and a really terrible user interface. All of those were present (except for the terrible user interface) on other phones. The difference? Pure hype. This is what Apple has discovered: it's far more important that people think what you're producing is innovative and cutting edge than for you to actually do it. Seriously, compare the Nokia E70 to the original iPhone, which came out about a year later, and the iPhone comes up short in almost every category, aside from having an Apple logo on it. And yet today, people still claim the iPhone was somehow revolutionary.

Just for the record, I own neither a smart phone of any kind, or a tablet. Both seem like a waste of time and money and also seem to be turning the population into mindless fools who spend 8 hours a day staring at a tiny rectangle and typing the inane minutia of their day onto tiny buttons. However, if I did buy a smart phone, it would be a non Apple one, not to be different, but because much better value will be found elsewhere.
